Future Technological Trends in chemical process industry 

Chemical Engineering with biotechnology will spring new surprises for the CPI in the future years to come. The world of science and medicine could be altered dramatically by the use of antibodies as catalysts in chemical reaction and drug therapy. Advancement in genetic engineering with computer based molecular modeling are helping enzymes to move into very-many new processes. Bio Reactors, Bio Sensors, Bio separations, Bio Mass, Chirality, r.DNA Techniques, are setting new standards for CPI. Environmental Pressures could make a dramatic shift towards biological-based feed stock including Natural Gas and agricultural products, alternative products so called bio-fuels, and alternative biological routes to Chemical Process could restructure the CPI in the future years to come. A new CPI will emerge based on higher value added specialty products many of which will be build upon new techniques such as biotechnology. Bio Technology has made a profound effect to make CPI green clean and safe, some of the areas where biotechnology has made significant contribution are agriculture, Pharmaceuticals, detergent formulation, textiles process, Pulp and Paper, Manufacturing hazardous waste treatment, commodity chemical production, fermentation Industry, Energy and Environment. In future biotechnology with sophistications in genetic engineering would radically change the CPI. Researchers say there is a possibility to genetically engineered plants to directly synthesize chemical intermediates.

Environmentalism the buzz word of the 90’s will become involuntary phenomena for the tomorrows CPI. New Materials has much to offer for the future CPI. Catalysis is the key to cost effective, environmentally compatible technologies. A new generation of catalysts is the synthetic zeolite technology as solid acids, solid base catalysts in the synthetic zeolite technology as solid acid, solid base catalysts and also singe site or metallocene catalysts are replacing conventional catalysts and are used to produce broad range of products. Catalysis also has a profound effect on process technology. Catalysts play a vital role in wide range of application, which makes catalysis a core competency for many top chemical producers in the world. With the advent of powerful and faster computers and rule based systems are helping in the design of new highly selective catalysts for specific reaction leading to high specificity there by generating fewer side reactions in a plethora of processes and also poised for innovation.

Advancement in conducting polymers, water soluble-biodegradable polymers high temperature and high module polymers, ceramic and polymer composites, metal matrix composites, tough engineering ceramic materials, as well as engineering plastics could lead to cleaner process technology there by could emerge key in winning technologies. Driven by the need for environmentally sound and energy efficient process technology and with the advent of new membrane materials, membrane technology namely Micro Filtration, Ultra Filtration, Nano Filtration, Reverse osmosis, electro dialysis and pervaporation have found vide acceptance in the CPI. Advancement in membrane technology has lead to the development of membranes suitable for industrial separation and non cryogenic systems. Membranes are also used for high volume industrial application in several major separation area including gas mixture separation and, desalination, high purity water production, waste water clean up systems and air purifiers. As membranes meets new environmental challenges, also offers flexibility, low operating cost and is a key technology for pollution prevention. CPI that are positioned to use this technology will reap greatest rewards.
